Tier 1 — the archetype "drive a valley, pick a pull-off" corridor. Runs ~11 mi up a wide valley off US 191 south of Big Sky, alongside Taylor Creek. Multiple established (requires established campsite use) pull-offs with fire rings, spaced far enough apart that you're not on top of neighbors — mountain views and creek access without the campground feel. Some sites have old wooden horse corrals; a primitive toilet sits along the road. Works for a car/van — bring levelers.
Serious grizzly country (backs onto Yellowstone). Forest-wide food-storage order in effect: store food in a hard-sided vehicle or bear box. Gallatin Canyon (US 191): no dispersed camping within ½ mile of the highway May 15–Sep 15 — always drive up the side road.
Before you go: check road/fire alerts (Custer Gallatin) and download offline maps — cell service dies past the highway.
