Easy out-and-back up a red-rock canyon on the north side of Hebgen Lake, ending where the Red Canyon Creek hiking trail begins. Rolling grass hills, pine, and views of the rock face of Kirkwood Ridge.
Notes
- ~2.7 mi each way (~5.4 mi out-and-back), rated easy — a full-width road rather than singletrack. Elevation gain isn't published; treat it as gentle.
- The lower section crosses private property — stay on the road and don't stray. Past the boundary it's national forest, with more ruts and a surface that turns slick when wet.
- Off Hebgen Lake Rd near Lakeview, ~1.5–2 hr from Bozeman via Ennis and Cameron. This is 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake country — the Red Canyon fault scarp is right here.
- Designated dispersed campsites further up, a couple right along Red Canyon Creek.
