For a window each spring (roughly late April–June, varies with plowing) Going-to-the-Sun Road is plowed but still closed to cars — cyclists ride it car-free. A brief fall window also opens after the alpine section closes to vehicles (~mid-October) before snow.
Notes
- Most ride the west side from Avalanche Creek; Avalanche → Logan Pass is ~16 mi each way (~32 mi RT) with ~3,200 ft gain. You can turn around anywhere — The Loop is a great shorter target.
- How far you can go depends on where plow crews are working that week; gates/signs mark the closure. Check the NPS Glacier road status + text alerts (text "GNPROADS" to 333111).
- ~5.5–6 hr drive from Bozeman — plan an overnight (Columbia Falls / West Glacier).
- Cost: park entrance fee. E-bike rentals available in Apgar/West Glacier if you want the climb easier.
- Carry bear spray on your body; bring layers for fast-changing alpine weather.
