When the upper Hyalite Canyon road is gated shut for the season, ride the empty pavement up to Hyalite Reservoir and camp — no cars, quiet canyon.
Notes
- The upper road (past the winter gate) typically closes ~Dec 1 and reopens mid-to-late May; during the closure it's walk/bike/ski only. Confirm the current gate status before going.
- ~1 hr, mostly-uphill pedal to the reservoir; dispersed and developed camping around Hyalite. Bring lights if you'll descend after dark.
- <1 hr from Bozeman. Grizzly country — bear spray and proper food storage.
