Each spring there's a short window (typically late March–mid April, before roads open to cars ~April 17) when a ~49-mile stretch of road from the West Entrance through Madison, Norris, and on to Mammoth is open to bikes but closed to vehicles. A similar quiet window happens in fall after roads close to cars (early November).
Notes
- Start at the West Yellowstone Visitor Center; ride the 1/2 mile to the West Entrance.
- Popular easy option: West Entrance → Madison Junction, ~14 mi each way and relatively flat. Strong riders continue toward Norris/Mammoth.
- Dates shift yearly with snowpack — check the NPS Yellowstone biking page before going. Expect plows/admin vehicles, no services, and changing weather.
- Cost: park entrance fee (~$20/person for bike/walk-in, 7-day). Not a ticketed/lift activity.
- Maintain wildlife distance (bison, bears); ride single-file, daylight only.
